Twins Revamp Roster for 2013
Fans with Minnesota Twins tickets knew that the rebuilding
process was going to be a long one after losing over 90 games for the second
consecutive season. GM Terry Ryan began rebuilding the team in earnest this
offseason, with a main focus on improving the depth of the starting pitching,
both in the short and long term. The Twins signed veteran starters Kevin
Correia and Mike Pelfrey to short term contracts, giving the team a pair of
seasoned arms in the pitching rotation. Ryan also brought in oft-injured ace
Rich Harden on a minor league deal, a big gamble considering Harden’s injury
history. But if he manages to stay healthy, Harden could be a solid complement
to Scott Diamond in the rotation. Ryan also made a couple big trades this
offseason, shipping away Denard Span to Washington and Ben Revere to
Philadelphia for even more pitching depth. Right hander Vance Worley, acquired
from the Phillies, gives the team a young arm to develop in the back of the
rotation right away. With the pitching staff that Ryan has assembled for 2013,
the Twins should be much more competitive than they were a season ago.
However, the biggest additions from the trade may not see the field for the Twins in 2013 at all. Minnesota landed stud pitching prospects Alex Meyer and Trevor May from the Nationals and Phillies, respectively, and both look like potential aces down the road. It is not easy for teams to give up on proven production, but the talent of Meyer and May is unquestioned, and each has a chance to play a huge role in Minnesota down the road. The Twins were one of the best teams in baseball during the last decade, in large part because they always fielded quality pitching staffs, and have obviously gotten away from that in the last two seasons. Ryan recognized that problem, and while the Twins have a lot of work to do to get back into playoff contention, the seeds of progress were definitely planted this winter.
