Rebels Cannot Hang Onto Lead Against Aggies
It was not a pleasant day for fans with Ole Miss football
tickets, as the Rebels were defeated 30-27 in agonizing fashion by new SEC West
rival Texas A&M. Despite holding a 10-point lead well into the fourth
quarter, Ole Miss could not keep the Aggies at bay, and A&M freshman QB
Johnny Manziel connected with WR Ryan Swope on a 20-yard pass for the go-ahead
score with less than two minutes to play.
QB Bo Wallace was productive throwing the ball after a disappointing performance against Alabama, and threw for over 300 yards against the Aggies. He also had a 14-yard scramble for a touchdown, as his mobility has continued to be a key component of his game. But Wallace’s two interceptions proved to be crucial, with one of his picks being returned for a touchdown just before halftime. He seems to have regained his edge in the ongoing quarterback competition with Barry Brunetti, who did not attempt a pass against the Aggies, but it is clear that Wallace still has a lot of development left to do. On a positive not, RB Jeff Scott again proved to be a dangerous weapon on the ground for the Rebels, notching his second 100-yard game of the season. He will never have the size of most traditional running backs, but it is impossible to ignore his production at this point.
The defense had a particularly tough time stopping the run, and the Aggies racked up 290 net yards on the ground. Both RB Ben Malena and Manziel rushed for over 100 yards on the day, and their effectiveness on the ground seemed to wear out the Rebel defenders. Ole Miss was able to win the turnover battle with the Aggies, as the visitors coughed up the ball four times on fumbles and another two times with interceptions. While the Rebels were not able to capitalize on these mistakes, the fact that they were able to force this many turnovers is a great sign for the defense going forward.
