Super Bowl XLVII: Who Has the Edge?
The big game is just days away, and fans with Super Bowl
tickets should have in store for an exciting matchup. Like all games, matchups
will be key on Super Bowl Sunday, and the two teams compare to each other very
well. The two-week layoff could be key for San Francisco’s Justin Smith.
Arguably the 49ers’ best player, the defensive lineman is still recovering from
a torn triceps he suffered in the regular season. Pass rusher Aldon Smith is
wildly more effective when Justin Smith is taking on blockers, so the 49ers
have to feel good about their chances with Justin Smith having extra time to
rest and heal. The Ravens retooled offensive line has played much better
lately, but it is still a group without a lot of experience working together.
The one area the Niners could be vulnerable is in the secondary, as Matt Ryan
torched them through the air in the first half of the NFC Championship Game.
While Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith and Dennis Pitta are not quite as formidable
as the Falcons’ lineup, they are more than capable of causing the San Francisco
defensive backs a lot of problems.
Colin Kaepernick has been a revelation for the Niners, and his dynamic playmaking ability is one of the main reasons that San Francisco has advanced this far in the playoffs. The Ravens will have to run a zone defense frequently against Kaepernick, as it is too dangerous to allow defenders to turn their back on him. This could leave some spots for TE Vernon Davis to get open, and he finally seemed to get on the same page as Kaepernick against the Falcons. Of course, the Ravens did an excellent job of taking away Tom Brady’s myriad weapons, especially in the second half, with corners Cary Williams and Corey Graham doing an especially good job in the secondary. That being said, the 49ers are a ground team first and foremost, and will try and establish their running game with Frank Gore, LaMichael James and Kaepernick. The Ravens’ Haloti Ngata is one of the best defensive linemen in the league, and if he’s on his game the Niner will find it difficult to move him. How these individual and positional matchups actually work out will make all the difference during the game, and the winner will likely have a key advantage in one of these closely fought battles.
